Axis Sonora (working title)

2026, BurningMan Honoraria Proposal, Blackrock City, NV, USA

Axis Sonora is a monumental, sound-reactive sculpture inspired by the axis mundi. A branching architectural form becomes a participatory instrument, where analog sound, shifting light, and collective interaction create an evolving sensory environment.

Axis Sonora is a singular, tree-like architectural structure organized around a central vertical trunk inspired by the axis mundi. The core rises upward as a sculpted hyperbolic paraboloid form, branching outward into a fractal network of roots and limbs that define a semi-spherical, inhabitable space.

The structure is built on a steel armature clad in concrete panels, which serve as the substrate for a richly detailed mosaic skin. Glazed ceramic tiles, glass, and translucent materials wrap the surfaces in complex patterns, accented by brass, copper, and polished steel elements. By day, sunlight filters through faceted translucent panels in the canopy, casting color and shadow across the interior space.

At night, select tiles are backlit from within, creating a glowing secondary layer beneath the mosaic. LED lighting embedded along panel seams traces the branching geometry and responds dynamically to sound, transforming the sculpture into a luminous landmark visible across the Playa.

Axis Sonora is designed as a fully participatory instrument and architectural environment. Analog sound elements—including bells, chimes, gongs, and organ pipes—are distributed throughout the structure, encouraging tactile exploration and collective play. Participants activate sound through touch and movement, creating layered ambient soundscapes that shift depending on position within the space.

The branching geometry functions as an acoustic field, shaping how soundwaves propagate, overlap, and dissipate. No single interaction dominates; instead, sound emerges from shared participation. Lighting systems respond to these sonic inputs, transitioning from calm, meditative states to more vivid, kinetic patterns based on collective activity. The result is an open-ended environment that rewards curiosity, cooperation, and experimentation.

Axis Sonora explores resonance as a fundamental condition of connection—between individuals, systems, and environments. Inspired by the axis mundi, the sculpture presents a vertical world-structure that unites ground and sky, matter and vibration. Its branching form reflects how complex systems grow: through repetition, divergence, and interdependence.

Sound is treated not as performance but as a physical phenomenon—waves traveling through space, structure, and bodies. Participants do not consume the experience; they generate it together. Each interaction subtly alters the shared field, reinforcing the idea that collective presence shapes the environment we inhabit.

The work invites reflection on individuality and coexistence: how distinct voices remain unique while contributing to a larger harmony. Through geometry, sound, and light, Axis Sonora offers a space to feel interconnected without erasing difference—a living model of mutual influence and shared authorship.

IMPACT…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

This project offers the community a powerful new cultural asset: an immersive sculptural environment that invites creativity, collaboration, and shared discovery. By merging art, architecture, sound, and light into a single participatory space, the piece becomes a catalyst for social connection—encouraging strangers to play instruments together, co-create ambient soundscapes, and experience a sense of collective authorship.

For local communities and visitors alike, the sculpture provides an accessible entry point into the worlds of analog music-making, interactive design, and public art. Its multisensory nature ensures that people of all ages and abilities can engage, whether through touch, movement, or simply being enveloped by the shifting sonic and luminous atmosphere.

The work also has the potential to become a landmark gathering space—an icon of creativity that supports workshops, performances, educational programming, and informal community rituals. It invites repeated visitation, offering new patterns of sound, light, and social interaction each time it is experienced.

For funders, investing in this project means enabling a public artwork that deepens cultural life, strengthens community bonds, and demonstrates how thoughtful, interdisciplinary design can transform shared space into a site of wonder, reflection, and play.
